Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site in 2014 recorded no archaeologically significant features or deposits. A second watching brief at an adjacent site in 2015 had similarly negative results. In both areas the uppermost undisturbed deposit was a brown-grey clay interpreted as a former salt marsh deposit.

Map

May-July 2014. Watching Brief.
No archaeologically significant features or deposits were recorded and no finds were recovered.
The initial removal of overburden across the site exposed a layer of geotextile suggesting the site had previously been stripped to this level. The brownish grey clayey silt layer exposed beneath was interpreted as a natural tidal-flat deposit.
Cartographic evidence suggests that the site was probably only seasonally-grazed salt marsh until at least the late 16th century and had probably remained open pasture until relatively recently.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 April 2018.

September-October 2015. Watching Brief.
No archaeologically significant features or deposits were observed and no finds were recovered. The site had seen considerable disturbance during the construction of the building that previously stood here. As during the earlier work the uppermost undisturbed deposit was a brown-grey clay interpreted as a probable salt marsh deposit.
See report (S2) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.483).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 April 2018. Amended 27 May 2019.
