Full Description
June 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The only features of note were five possible pits and an irregular linear feature, none of which produced any dating evidence - finds being limited to a small amount of animal bone. The fills of the pits were largely unremarkable and their function is therefore unclear. It remains possible that at least some were actually natural features, as was thought be the case with a number of other discrete features that were investigated.
There was a notable lack of subsoil, although this was not thought to be the result of plough truncation but rather evidence that the site had only been relatively recently taken into cultivation. Cartographic evidence suggests this land was once part of Gayton Common before it was enclosed during the 19th century.
A post-medieval roof tile fragment was the only unstratified find recovered.
