February 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The eight trenches excavated revealed no archaeologically significant features and no finds were recovered.
There was evidence for modern disturbance across much of the site, with what appeared to be an intact deposit sequence surviving only in the north-western area. Here topsoil lay above natural alluvial silt and clay deposits, beneath which a probable river terrace gravel was encountered. These deposits suggest that the site was an area of salt marsh until relatively recently. It would appear that the north-eastern part of the site would have been an area of slightly higher, drier land, with the terrace gravels dropping down and the alluvial deposits becoming increasingly deep to the south. This would appear to be confirmed by the results of trial trenching undertaken around the same time at a site immediately to the south (NHER 62665), where much deeper alluvial deposits were encountered.
