Summary

A trial trench excavated at this site in 2011 revealed no archaeologically significant features or deposits, with alluvial probable saltmarsh deposits encountered immediately beneath modern levelling and surface layers. A subsequent watching brief maintained during groundworks at the site in 2016 had similarly negative results. No finds were recovered during either phase of work.

Evaluation of proposed development site.
Despite the surrounding evidence for Late Saxon to medieval salt-making the single trench excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically significant features.
Augering recorded a sequence of natural alluvial deposits and a possible small creek. The uppermost alluvial deposit lay immediately below modern levelling and surface deposits.
No finds were recovered.

February-March 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new office buildings.
The ground beams excavated revealed no archaeologically significant features or deposits. A dark greyish brown silty clay was exposed beneath a series of modern layers.
No finds were recovered.
