Full Description
May-June 2012. Walkover Survey.
Archaeological Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey within Old Common Plantation (Compartment 8).
A large (0.1ha) irregular depression at the northern tip of this area is throught to represent an extensive former extraction pit (Site 14). A sub-circular depression to the south-east at TF 9093 4216 (Site 15) is also a former extraction pit. An irregular area of gentle undulations in the south-west corner of this area at TF 8980 4185 (Site 17) could also be the remnants of extraction although it remains possible that these are of natural origin.
A much shallower sub-circular depression at TF 8990 4205 (Site 16) is probably a former pond.
See report (S1) for further details.
