Summary

A Rapid Identification Survey undertaken in 2012 identified three large depressions at this location, all three of which are likely to represent the remains of former extraction pits. Two of these features are still marked on Ordnance Survey maps as disused pits.

Archaeological Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey within Old Common Plantation (Compartment 9).
Large depressions recorded at TF 9022 4171 (Site 18) and TF 9022 4195 (Site 22) are both still marked on Ordnance Survey maps as disused pits. A horseshoe-shaped depression at TF 9040 4164 (Site 19) is also though to be the remains of a former extraction pit.
