Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2017 identified a number of ditches and several possible pits, none of which could be firmly dated. The only finds of note were a sherd of prehistoric pottery and a potentially Bronze Age/Iron Age flint flake, both of which were recovered from ditches. The generally sterile fills of these features suggests that they are unlikely to have lain particularly close to any contemporary settlement.

Map

October 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The eight trenches revealed several ditches and a number of discrete features, none of which could be convincingly dated.
At least six separate ditches were observed, the fills of which were sterile, with finds limited to a single sherd of undiagnostic Late Prehistoric pottery and a flint flake of possible Bronze Age or Iron Age date. One also produced fragments of horse tooth. Environmental samples taken from these features produced very little in the way of plant macrofossils or other remains, making it unlikely that they had lain close to any contemporary settlement. The varying alignments of these ditches also suggests that they may well represent more than one phase of activity. The ditch that produced the single prehistoric sherd may correspond with one of several linear cropmark features that have been identified on aerial photographs of this area (NHER 54443).
The discrete features were of varying size and shape and whilst it is possible some were deliberately excavated pits their fills were unremarkable and no finds were recovered. Environment samples taken from these features also produced little other than sparse charcoal fragments.
