Map

April 2016. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of proposed development at land north of Bawburgh Road.
This assessment concluded that the potential for archaeologically significant remains to be present was probably low.
See Heritage Statement (S1) for further details.

November 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
One of the three trenches excavated at this location exposed a relatively substantial north-to-south aligned ditch that produced a small assemblage of Iron Age pottery sherds and several presumably residual Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints. Another sherd of Iron Age pottery was recovered from an adjacent probable natural feature. The pottery assemblage is of later Iron Age character and includes sherds that are possibly wheel-finished and therefore potentially date to the Late Iron Age or immediate post-conquest period. A sample taken from one of the ditch fills produced charred spelt wheat and hulled barley, which were the main cereals cultivated around the 1st century AD. Hammerscale was also noted, providing evidence for iron smithing in the vicinity.
The only other features identified were two land drains.
Metal-detecting produced a small assemblage of post-medieval to modern objects, none of which were of any great interest.
See report (S2) for further details.

October 2017-January 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of various groundworks including construction of new access road, the excavation of footing trenches for a new building and the creation of a reed-bed area.
A single probable pit was observed in the reed-bed area. This feature produced no finds.
See report (S3) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2018.143).
