Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2016 revealed a ditch and at least one pit of probable Late Saxon or early medieval date, both of which lay in the north-east corner of the field, close to Church Street. Samples taken from these features produced a range of material likely to represent domestic waste. A subsequent watching brief recorded a single ditch at the southern end of the field that was potentially of much more recent date.

Map

November 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of route of proposed new water main.
Only the trench closest to Church Street revealed archaeologically significant remains, which consisted of a north-east to south-west aligned ditch and two shallow pits. The ditch and one of the pits both produced small assemblages of Saxo-Norman pottery (including several Thetford-type ware sherds) and fragments of fired clay. Samples taken from the fills of these features produced a number of charred cereal grains, the nature of which were consistent with the date suggested by the pottery. Also noted were the residues of potential cultivated pulses, various animal bone fragments and a range of other material likely to represent fire or heath debris. Hammerscale was also present in one of the samples, providing evidence for iron smithing in the vicinity.
The second pit produced no dating evidence.
Metal-detecting during the excavation of these trenches recovered only a small number of post-medieval objects, none of which were of any particular interest.
See report (S1) for further details.

October 2017-January 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of water main and cable trenches.
The only feature identified was a probable ditch at the southern end of the field. This feature was aligned north-west to south-east and therefore parallel to the adjacent extant field boundary.
No finds were recovered during this work.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2018.143).
