Full Description
March 2010. Desk-based Assessment.
Survey of large proposed development area.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 November 2018.
January 2011. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Field A).
This survey identified a strong dipolar anomaly at the western edge of the field that could indicate an area of burning or some form of industrial activity such as a kiln. Few other potentially archaeologically significant anomalies were however identified in this field.
Two parallel linear anomalies represent the ploughed-out remains of former field boundaries depicted on historic maps of the area.
An oval shaped zone of low magnetism close to the centre of the field corresponds with a former quarry pit that is still visible as a earthwork feature at this location. A sinuous band of high magnetism in the southernmost part of the field is also though to represent the fills of former quarry pits.
During the survey it was noted that the northernmost part of this field (previously a separate field) was covered with scatters of post-medieval pottery sherds and tile fragments. The survey identified a zone of ferrous enhancement in this area, consistent with ferrous debris from manure scatters.
This survey identified no evidence for surviving subsurface remains associated with the north-east to south-west aligned linear cropmark recorded at this location (NHER 54407).
See report (S2) for further details.
See NHER 42812 for information on other unstratified finds recovered in this field.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 November 2018.
April 2013. Trial Trenching.
Limited evaluation of large proposed development area (Trenches 3 and 7).
A trench positioned to target the dipolar anomaly identified during the geophysical survey revealed two pits, both of which contained material of obviously modern date. It appears that these were the cause of the anomaly, rather than features or deposits associated with industrial activity.
A second trench excavated towards the eastern edge of the field revealed no archaeologically significant features.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2018.
