Full Description
March 2010. Desk-based Assessment.
Survey of large proposed development area.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 November 2018.
January 2011. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Fields B and C).
This survey identified no anomalies that could be confidently identified as indicating the presence of archaeologically significant remains. Two sub-circular anomalies in the eastern field may represent the remains of ring-ditches, although it is suggested that they were most likely cultivation marks. A number of discrete positive anomalies could represent either pits but could also be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Two linear anomalies were also noted in this area, one of which is perpendicular to an existing field boundary and therefore most likely represents an infilled ditch of relatively recent date.
A large zone of high magnetism detected in the north-west corner of this area is thought to represent either an area of burning or (more likely) dumped waste material of industrial origin. This anomaly corresponds with a concentration of post-medieval pottery identified in 1975 (NHER 9403), supporting the suggestion that this was debris dumped into a former clay pit.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2018.
