Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 2014 and 2019 recovered Mesolithic/Early Neolithic, Early Neolithic, Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age and Early Bronze Age worked flints; Roman, Late Saxon and medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval brick; a post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragment; a post-medieval sandstone hone; Roman to medieval lava quern fragments; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval jettons and a token and a range of other, Roman, Middle Saxon to post-medieval and undated metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman brooch; a Middle Saxon rotary key; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval keys, coin weights, horse harness stud, disc with heraldic motif, a clasp, rowel spur, thimble and lead ampulla; a medieval/post-medieval dagger scabbard shape and vessel fragments; a post-medieval spur, weight, watch winders, thimbles, vessel fragment and cloth seal and undated casting waste.

February-March 2014. Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Unsystematic survey of whole field, undertaken by [1] during trial trenching by NPS Archaeology.
A range of finds were recovered including:
1 Mesolithic flint blade core.
1 Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blade.
2 Early Neolithic flint fabricators, 5 side scrapers, 1 notched flake, 1 blade core, 3 blades and 4 flakes.
2 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint horseshoe scrapers, 2 side scrapers, 1 possible flake blank and 28 flakes.
1 Early Bronze Age flint thumbnail scraper.
1 ?prehistoric burnt flint.
1 Roman coin and 6 pottery sherds (very abraded).
2 Roman to medieval lava quern fragments.
1 Middle Saxon rotary key with central cruciform motif.
8 Late Saxon pottery sherds.
7 medieval coins, 1 coin weight (for French silver teston), 36 pottery sherds, 1 brick, 1 shield-shaped heraldic horse harness stud, 1 flat disc engraved with heraldic motif (triple-towered castle), 1 rowel spur, 1 rotary key, 2 buckles, 1 ?buckle, 2 strap ends and 1 lead ampulla (from Shire of Our Lady at Walsingham).
15 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds, 1 suspension ring, 1 ?purse frame fragment, 1 copper alloy ?vessel fragment and 1 lead token/cloth seal.
16 post-medieval coins, 1 token, 17 pottery sherds, 1 clay tobacco pipe fragment (a rare example stampled with 'GOD//BLESS//KING//GEORGE'), 3 thimbles, 2 watch winders, 1 brooch, 3 buckles, 10 buttons and 1 copper alloy vessel fragment.
1 ?post-medieval lead disc.
3 post-medieval/modern pottery sherds and 1 sandstone hone.
2 modern coins
1 undatable unidentified iron object.
No attempt was made to record the exact position of the finds, although it is noted that there was a distinct concentration of objects close to the western edge of the field at [2].

The finds themselves are presumed to be part of an archive now deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.234).
