Full Description
Before 20 February 2004. Stray Find.
Found in nets of trawler off the coast at Sheringham:
Large ship's timber with peg holes. See photographs (S1) [1].
Photographs of this timber were examined by Gillian Hutchinson (National Maritime Museum) who identified it as a frame timber from a clinker-built vessel of probable medieval date. It was noted that the timber was in good condition, suggesting it may well have come from an in situ wreck on the seabed. A subsequent search of information held in the Maritime National Records (English Heritage) suggested that the only known wreck of this date in the area is a German cargo vessel lost in 1524. It was suggested that a sample was taken for dendrochronology but it is unclear if this work took place. At the time they were last contacted back in 2004 the timber was still in the possession of the finder. Its present whereabouts are unknown.
See correspondence in file for further details and (S2) for examples of similar timbers.
This object was originally recorded as being from grid square TF 62 35. The mapped location of this record is however based on a location marked on a map of the area that was found with the correspondence and had presumably been annotated by the finder.
