Summary

Trial trenching of part of this site in 2009 revealed no evidence for archaeologically significant feature or deposits. A geophysical survey of adjacent areas in 2014/2015 had similarly negative results, with neither phase of work identifying any evidence that could be conclusively associated with the aircraft crash site identified during an earlier fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey (NHER 63367).

2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of western route options for Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 July 2019.

November 2009. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site F2).
A number of the trenches excavated in this field exposed colluvial deposits. This material was particularly thick at the western end of the field, where in places it was at least 1.8m deep.
No archaeologically significant features were observed and no finds were recovered.
There was therefore no evidence that could be associated with the possible aircraft crash site identified at this location during an earlier fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey (NHERs 51423 and 63367). It does however appear that none of the trenches were placed over the main concentration of aircraft debris.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
Previously recorded under NHER 51423.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 August 2015.

May 2014-January 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on updated proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Areas F3a and F3b).
Examination of blocks to north and south of strip subject to trial trenching in 2009.
This survey identified no anomalies of obvious archaeological significance.
A broad area of high magnitude magnetic disturbance identified midway along the northern edge of the field corresponds with a large, recently-filled pit visible as a cropmark on 1946 aerial photographs (NHER 51423). The magnitude of the disturbance is suggestive of buried ferrous debris and it is noted that this could represent material associated with an aircraft crash site that was identified during an earlier fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey (NHER 63367). It does however now appear that the main concentration of aircraft debris was actually to the north-east of this location. It has also been suggested that the crash could be one that occurred in 1966, in which case it cannot be associated with this feature. See NHERs 51423 and 63367 for further information.
A buried modern pipe was detected in the southern part of the field, represented by a north-east to south-west aligned dipolar linear anomaly. This would appear to correspond with a previously mapped linear cropmark that had been tentatively interpreted as a possible bank feature of medieval to post-medieval date (NHER 52387).
Various discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to have been caused by ferrous debris in the topsoil.
A broad linear band of high magnitude anomalies is thought to represent changes in the underlying drift geology.
See report (S5) for further details.
