Summary

Multiple earthwork banks, probably dating to the post medieval period, are visible on visualised lidar data. The bank features most likely relate to former boundaries, trackways, plantation boundaries and wood banks, with some corresponding to features mapped on the Tithe, First and Second edition Ordnance Survey maps. The banks are similar to a more extensive area of earthwork banks to the east (NHER 63252). The site includes an area of possible ridge and furrow, also of probable post medieval date. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015) it is probable that the earthworks still survive.

Map

March 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Multiple earthwork banks on various alignments, possibly dating to the post medieval period, are seen on visualised lidar data (S1-S2). The bank features most likely relate to former boundaries, trackways, plantation boundaries and wood banks with some of the banks (located at TL 7886 9341 & TL7894 9310) relating to features mapped on the Tithe, First and Second edition Ordnance Survey maps (S3-S5). The banks are similar to an area of further earthwork banks to the east (NHER 63252).

August 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The site has been expanded to include an area of possible ridge and furrow to its south, also visible on visualised lidar data (S1-S2). Like the earthwork banks, this too is likely to be of post medieval date. It is not entirely clear whether the visible features are ridge and furrow or further, closely spaced banks. It is possible that they represent temporary cultivation of what is likely to have been former heathland, but they could instead relate to post medieval or more recent forestry activity.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 10 August 2020.
