Summary

Archaeological work undertaken at this location between 2008 and 2010 revealed several linear features of probable medieval to post-medieval date. These were mostly recorded during trial trenching in 2008 and included several features interpreted as medieval furrows and a ditch of probable post-medieval date. A small discrete feature was also found to contain a fragment of Bronze Age pottery. A number of medieval finds including a seal matrix were recovered during a subsequent watching brief.

Map

September-November 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable (Trenches 6-9).
A trench excavated at TG 1074 4248 revealed three parallel, east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear features that were interpreted as possible plough furrows. These features and a thick subsoil deposit present at this location were regarded as evidence for medieval open-field agriculture. A similarly-aligned feature exposed in a trench to the south was however probably a ditch associated with a former field boundary marked at this location on 19th-century maps.
The only other feature of note was a small possible stake-hole that produced a single sherd of Bronze Age pottery.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a north-to-south aligned cropmark thought to be associated with the nearby medieval moated site (NHER 6304).
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).

2009-2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping and other groundworks associated with installation of the Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable.
It appears that at least one additional ditch was recorded during this phases of work. A number of medieval finds were also apparently recovered, including a seal matrix.
Final report awaited. See assessment report (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
