Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2008 and 2010 uncovered a small number of features, the majority of which were poorly dated. Trial trenching in 2008 revealed several pits of possible prehistoric date and several ditches, one of which was of probable post-medieval. A watching brief maintained during subsequent groundworks in 2009/2010 had largely negative results with no additional archaeologically-significant remains uncovered. Several medieval objects were recovered during this phase of work.

Map

September-November 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable (Trenches 78, 78a, 79 and 79a).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of pits and three ditches.
Three oval pits exposed in one trench all which produced small amounts of burnt flint and were therefore regarded as potentially prehistoric.
One of the ditches is probably of relatively recent date as it appears to correspond with a former field boundary marked on 19th-century maps. An adjacent pit was also regarded as a probable modern feature. The other two ditches were of uncertain date as finds were limited to a single Early Neolithic serrated flint blade. It was however noted that their north-to-south and east-to-west alignments are markedly different from those of the surrounding extant field boundaries. They are however similar to the alignments of the predominantly medieval ditches exposed in the field to the north (NHER 11339).

2009-2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping and other groundworks associated with installation of the Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable.
No additional archaeologically-significant remains identified. Finds recovered included medieval objects of unspecified types and a medieval coin.
Final report awaited. See assessment report (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
