Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2008 and 2010 revealed no significant remains. Trial trenching in 2008 identified no archaeologically-significant features or deposits and a watching brief maintained during subsequent groundworks in 2009/2010 had similarly negative results. No finds were recovered during either phase of work. A more extensive geophysical survey undertaken in 2017/2018 also revealed little of potential archaeological interest - the only response of note being an amorphouse area of magnetic disturbance that was potentially associated with quarrying.

Map

September-November 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable (Trench 87).
The single trench excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. No finds recovered.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
Previously recorded under NHER 51470.
S. Howard (HES), 21 March 2012. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 14 June 2019.

2009-2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping and other groundworks associated with installation of the Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable.
No archaeologically-significant remains observed and no finds recovered.
See (S3). The results of this project are also briefly summarised in (S2).
Previously recorded under NHER 51470.
S. Howard (HES), 21 March 2012. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 14 June 2019.

A combined archive comprising material from both phases of archaeological work at this site between 2008 and 2010 has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.361).
P. Watkins (HES), 10 June 2019.

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (F176).
This survey identified little of potential archaeological interest – the only response of note being an amorphous area of magnetic disturbance at TG 1297 2482 that is potentially associated with former quarrying. Although a number of smaller areas of magnetic enhancement were also recorded these are all thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). A north-to-south aligned dipolar anomaly crossing the site marks the route of the cable for the Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
