Full Description
2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2019.
March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site G4). This area was selected due to the presence of cropmark features within this field (NHER 51942).
Although a number of anomalies were identified, none are likely to respresent archaeologically-significant features. Although various weak linear anomalies were identified, most, if not all, were probably the result of cultivation practices. Small discrete dipolar anomalies detected across the survey area were almost certainly caused by fired or ferrous debris in the topsoil.
It should be noted that subsequent trial trenching at this site (see below) identified identified a number of ditches (including features corresponding with the two cropmarks that cross this area), suggesting that the results of this survey are not reliable.
See report (S3) for further details.
Previously recorded under NHER 51942.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 August 2015. Amended 16 June 2019.
April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 44).
A fairly small rectangular block of land was examined adjacent to the northern boundary of this field.
No potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies were identified.
Various discrete anomalies were all thought to represent either ferrous debris or changes in the underlying geology.
The area surveyed did not coincide with any of the linear cropmarks mapped in this area (NHER 51942).
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2019.
April-August 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field G4).
The 14 trenches excavated at this location revealed only sparse, scattered features, the majority of which were ditches.
Both of the linear cropmarks that cross this site (NHER 51942) were however found to be associated with surviving sub-surface remains. The northernmost, east-north-east to west-south-west aligned cropmark was associated with a ditch that produced a single sherd of medieval pottery. Medieval pottery was also recovered from the ditch that corresponded with the southern, north-east to south-west cropmark, although this feature also produced a range of post-medieval finds, including brick and tile fragments and bottle glass. A similarly-aligned ditch identified a little way to the north produced sherds of early post-medieval pottery.
The other two ditches identified included a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned feature that produced a fragment of post-medieval/modern bottle glass and probably corresponded with a former field boundary marked on 19th-century maps.
The single discrete feature identified was a small undated pit with a charcoal-rich fill and evidence for in-situ burning.
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 June 2019.
