Summary

This is the site where an American P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft crashed during World War Two, killing the pilot. Between 2015 and 2016 a series of archaeological investigations were undertaken in order to locate the crash site and remove any surviving remains prior to the construction of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road. The location of the crash site was roughly identified by an initial geophysical survey and confirmed by subsequent metal-detecting. This area was then subject to careful excavation ahead of the main phase of archaeological work at the site (the results of which are recorded under NHER 50501).

Map

This is the site where an American P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft crashed during World War Two. The aircraft was from 479th Fighter Group based at Wattisham and crashed on 22 April 1945 killing the pilot 1/Lt. Robert C. Young.

December 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey undertaken in order to investigate claims by local aircraft enthusiasts that this was the site where the P-51 Mustang had crashed.
The survey was not able to conclusively confirm the site of the crash. A high concentration of ferrous anomalies in the southern half of the field is however consistent with the debris pattern that would be expected at a crash site where the bulk of the wreckage had presumably been salvaged.
It was though noted that a photograph of the crash site shows the plane to be burnt out but the survey identified no evidence for intense or large-scale burning.
See report (S1) for further details.

May-June 2016. Metal-detecting Survey and Excavation.
Investigation of probable aircraft crash site ahead of main phase of excavation.
Report awaited.
