Map

1998. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of sewer main.
A single unstatified sherd of Late Saxon pottery was recovered at this location.
See report (S1).

It was initially reported that Late Saxon pottery had also been recovered, although no mention of this is made in the final report. However see note in file from excavator explaining that the Late Saxon sherd is the one mentioned as undated in the text.
Previously recorded under NHER 33750.
E. Rose (NLA) 23 September 1999. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 17 June 2019.

Previously the results of this watching brief were recorded solely under NHER 33750. This record now just details the group of ?medieval pits exposed in a field immediately west of Green Lane West, which were the only sub-surface remains identified. Although a range of unstatified finds were recovered elsewhere it appears that the majority were not accurately located. Those for which an approximate location can be determined from either the report or subsequent correspondence between NLA and the author (see file for NHER 33750) are now recorded separately (such as the sherd from this site and material found at its eastern end of pipe route, which is now noted under NHER 63459). It should however be noted that the report also mentions a sparse scatter of Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, the exact nature and distribution of which is not recorded. It is though noted that the majority of the sherds recovered were post-medieval in date.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 June 2019.
