Full Description
(S1) describes this as a two-storey house probably of brick, rendered and painted pink. Pitched roof with two gables east and west slate roof, nice stepped brick kneelers at base of gable. Small gabled weather porch at west end only, apparently contemporary. New windows, all under segmental arches, square openings upstairs, wider below. Bond appears to be Flemish garden wall, not easy to identify under the pink paint.
Local History association: Large stone plaque: ducal coronet plus P and 1882. Flat tops to 8s may mean worked by William Browne’s stonemasons yard in London Road. The Duke of Portland was a major landowner in North Lynn. This may be 'Bentinck Cottage' mentioned in (S2). Now owned by Dow Chemicals and used by them for social purposes and community activity lettings. After the Estuary Cut diverted the river 1851-3, the tiny hamlet of North Lynn was cut off from West Lynn on the east side of the river; this house was built within that community but after this event and clearly has some relevance to the Portland estate.
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 25 June 2019.
