Map

(S1) describes this as an old building, seriously disfigured by a large extension. The late 18th century block still survives with a shallow-pitched slate roof and gable end chimney. This pub, together with a few cottages and later a Methodist Chapel (NHER 63477), formed the Gaywood outlier of Wootton Gap, where the Hunstanton and Fakenham roads forked. According to (S1) there may for a while have been an attached brewery which appears in directories as 'Smith and Blomfield'. There is a public house marked at this location on the Gaywood Tithe Map of 1838 (S2). Henry and Alfred Blowfeld are listed as brewers in Gaywood in 1839 (S3), but the New Inn at Wootton is listed in (S3) as belonging to Isaac Walker, which is the same name that appears on the Tithe Apportionment (S2).
According to (S4) sale particulars from 1850 describe The New Inn as having good cellars, out-offices, coach-house and stabling for 30 horses.
This building is still in use as a public house but its name was changed to The Deer's Leap in 2011.
