Summary

A geophysical survey undertaken in 2009 identified no clear evidence for archaeologically significant remains at this location. Subsequent trial trenching did however reveal several ditches, one of which produced a single sherd of Roman pottery and appeared to continue the line of a cropmark mapped in the field to the east (NHER 53493). The only other features identified were two ditches associated with a former post-medieval field boundary.

Map

2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of eastern route options for Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 July 2019.

March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site S2). One of three adjacent areas investigated due to their proximity to the site of a possible Roman marching camp (NHER 16451).
None of the anomalies detected were of obvious archaeological significance. A number of small discrete dipolar anomalies were detected, these almost certainly caused by fired or ferrous debris in the topsoil. Several weak north-to-south aligned linear positive anomalies were most likely the result of modern cultivation practices.
See report (S3) for further details.
Previously recorded under NHER 34610.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 August 2015. Amended 12 July 2019.

April-September 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field S2).
The 13 trenches excavated in this field revealed few features of interest.
A north-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditch at the eastern edge of the site produced a single sherd of Roman pottery and appears to have continued the line of a cropmark mapped in the field to the east (NHER 53493).
A pair of intercutting east-to-west aligned ditch towards the centre of the site corresponded with a former field boundary marked on the 1837 Spixworth tithe map (S4). A small number of finds were recovered from the later ditch, including a late post-medieval floor brick, clinker, iron fragments and burnt flint.
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 July 2019.
