Full Description
2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of eastern route options for Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 July 2019.
October 2007. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Phase 1).
Two trenches were excavated, one across the postulated line of a Roman road (NHER 7598) and the other placed to investigate a concentration of finds identified during earlier fieldwalking.
This work revealed no trace of the Roman road, which is consistent with the results of previous investigations. The second trench revealed an undated ditch.
A flint spall was the only find recovered at this site.
See report (S3) for further information. See also (S4).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.362).
Previously recorded under NHER 41874.
S. Howard (NLA), 25 November 2009. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 14 July 2019.
April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 38).
This survey identified no clear evidence for the Roman road (NHER 7598), although as noted following a subsequent survey (see below), it is possible that a faint north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomaly at the western edge of the field represented an associated feature. It should though be noted that the Beeston St Andrew tithe map of 1842 (S5) shows a number of similarly-aligned plantation boundaries at this location.
A broad cluster of anomalies in the south-eastern corner of the field appears to correspond with previously identified cropmarks thought to represent a post-medieval boundary bank (NHER 50799).
Although a range of other anomalies were identified these are not thought to be of archaeological significance, being most likely of agricultural or geological origin.
See report (S6) for further details.
Previously recorded under NHER 41874.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 August 2015.
May 2014-January 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Area S13).
This survey identified two faint north-north-west to south-south-east linear anomalies, the westernmost of which lay close to the western edge of the field, on the postulated line of the Roman road (NHER 7598). As noted above it also be associated with one of the similarly-aligned plantation boundaries marked at this location on the 1842 tithe map.
There wasn't any clear evidence for remains associated with the cropmark thought to represent a post-medieval boundary bank (NHER 50799). The western part of this cropmark did however appear to lie at the edge of a large group of anomalies that were probably associated with a change in the underlying geology.
The other linear anomalies identified were probably the result of past agricultural practices.
See report (S7) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 July 2019.
