Full Description
An historic photograph taken after 1882 shows a row of three cottages known as Chapel Buildings which stood immediately to the east of Fell's Warehouse (NHER 63496) and north of Lattice House (NHER 12005) on the west side of Chapel Street. The cottages are of painted brick with a ground floor and an attic storey with pitched dormer windows. Each cottage has a single casement window with a wooden shutter hinged at the bottom. The appearance of the cottages, and particularly their matching ornate door surrounds, suggests a late 18th century date. A photograph dating from 1978, after these cottages had been demolished, shows that they were brick built and had a mono-pitched roof. This became the site of an electricity sub-station which is visible on an aerial photograph of 1952, indicating that this ow of cottages was demolished before that date.
(S1) notes that historic aerial photographs show that Chapel Buildings had been demolished by 1945, and suggests that they were in fact cleared in the late 1930s, before the outbreak of World War Two.
See (S1) for further information.
