Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2018 identified a number of undated ditches, the most notable of which was a substantial feature that corresponded with one of a series of linear cropmarks thought to represent a Roman road or major land boundary (NHER 43591). The small number of possible discrete features investigated also produced no dating evidence.

Map

May 2018. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed route of Lound to Gorleston Water Pipeline (Trenches 2-5).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of features, although these all produced little or no dating evidence.
A substantial ditch exposed at the southern end of the site corresponded with one of a series of parallel east-north-east to west-south-west aligned cropmarks thought to potentially represent a Roman road or major land boundary (NHER 43591). This feature was 5m wide, 1.16m deep and contained a sequence of deposits likely to represent gradual, natural infilling. Finds were limited to a single worked flint and a sample produced heavily fragmented wood charcoal but little else in the way in the way of plant macrofossils or other debris. This sample also produced several small fragments of undiagnostic flint debitage. A parallel, similarly-aligned but much shallower possible ditch immediately to the north also produced no dating evidence.
The other undated ditches at this location included a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned feature at TG 5011 0261 that also corresponded with a previously identified cropmark (NHER 49260). A pair of adjacent north-to-south aligned ditches identified close to Browston Lane were near to the similarly-aligned cropmark enclosure mapped on the opposite site of the road (NHER 18388).
The small number of discrete features identified included a possible post-hole and a possible pit or natural feature.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS, HER copy awaited.
