Summary

A Second World War fortified loopholed wall survives as an extant structure and has been recorded on the ground. It overlooks fields to the east and a Second World War spigot mortar emplacement (NHER 30781) to the southeast. Docking was a category ‘A’ nodal point during the war (NHER 69317), and various anti-invasion defences were constructed at strategic locations around the village.

Map

13 May 2019. Casual Observation.
A World War Two fortified loopholed wall constructed of mortared brick, flint and chalk. The low L-shaped wall has a western face reinforced with concrete and three loopholes, overlooking fields to the east and the World War Two spigot mortar emplacement (NHER 30781) to the south-east.

June 2025. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The Second World War fortified and loopholed wall described above has been mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1945 (S3). As the aerial photographs are vertical, it was not possible to see the loopholes, but the mapped section can be seen to be wider and possibly taller than its continuations to the north and west. The location of the mapping has been adjusted to correlate with more recent aerial photography on which the wall is visible (S4), as this is likely to be more accurate than the rectified version of S3.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 18 June 2025.
