Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate eight servicemen from the parish who died in World War One (with one later addition), and latterly five who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2017.

Location: All Saints' Churchyard, A1065, Hilborough.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description: The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate eight servicemen from the parish who died in World War One (with one later addition), and latterly five who died in World War Two. It is described as on a tall shaft with a moulded foot. With the cross and shaft “inset to the west face, and the cross-head has the monogram HIS carved in relief to its centre with a carved roundel on each of the three cross arms. The shaft rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth, which surmounts a block base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication is on the front/west face (Inscription A), along with eight names on the north and south faces, and one additional name added later. The latter World War Two dedication is on the east face along with five names (Inscription B).

Inscription B: HILBOROUGH & BODNEY/ SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (5 NAMES).
