Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two addition, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding cross fleurée; with commemorative inscriptions on marble panels. This memorial was erected to commemorate eleven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single casualty from World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2017.

Location: St Martin's Churchyard, The Street, Hindringham.
Type: Cross Fleuree
Description:The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding cross fleurée with a lozenge aperture at its centre. It is used to commemorate eleven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single local casualty from World War Two. It is described as crowning “a tapering, hexagonal shaft with a collar and stepped-foot; the east face has an inverted sword carved in relief. The shaft rises from a corniced, hexagonal plinth with a molded foot surmounting a two-stepped hexagonal base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in leaded lettering on inset marble panels. The former World War One dedication is to the central face (Inscription A), with eleven names listed on the adjacent panels. The latter World War Two dedication is directly below the former, set into the plinth foot, along with a single name (Inscription B). “The remaining faces are inset without marble panels” (S1).
