World War One Memorial with World War Two Addition
Location: St Benedict's Churchyard, Church Road, Horning.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description: The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Celtic wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate ten local servicemen from the parish who died in World War One (with one later addition), and latterly a single local casualty from World War Two. The knot-work continues from the cross head to the upper half of the shaft which is described as rising “from a four-sided, tapering plinth with moulded cap surmounting a single-stepped, rock-faced base. The lower half of the shaft, and the plinth, carry the inscriptions in incised lettering, painted black” (S1). The former World War One dedication is on the front/west face of the shaft (Inscription A), continuing to the plinth below along with eleven names (Inscription B). According to (S1), historic photographs show a Latin phrase (Inscription C) was inscribed here but was subsequently altered to include the last name; this was re-inscribed below on the upper surface of the base. The latter World War Two dedication (single name) is on the north face (Inscription D).
