World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: In front of St Andrew’s Church, Attleborough Road, Hingham.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description: The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, Celtic wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate forty members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly six men who died in World War Two. It is described as on a tall shaft with a moulded foot. With the cross-head “carved in relief and has an interlace Celtic design incised to the west face; a gabled cap surmounts the upward arm of the cross”, and that “the shaft rises from a narrow, rectangular plinth with a splayed foot. The whole surmounts a two-stepped, paved base” (S1). An inscription is carved in relief to the wheel (Inscription A), with all other inscriptions to the cross shaft, and plinth, incised and painted black. The former World War One dedication (Inscription B) is to the west face of the plinth, with forty names listed above on the shaft. The latter World War Two dedication (Inscription C) is to the east face, with six names listed on an inset panel above on the shaft.
