World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: St James’ Churchyard, Church Lane, Hockwold cum Wilton.

Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, polished, obelisk. It is used to commemorate twenty-three local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three casualties from World War Two. The obelisk is described as rising “from a two-tiered, chamfered, square plinth upon a single-stepped, chamfered, square base. The whole surmounts a narrow, square platform” (S1). There are inscriptions and wreath designs on the plinth, all incised and painted gold. The former World War One dedication is on the north face of the obelisk, comprising a dated inscription (A) within a wreath. This is continued with inscriptions directly below to the upper tier (Inscription B), and the lower tier (Inscription C) of the plinth. Twenty-two names are on the east and west faces of the upper tier of the plinth along with an additional single name on the south face of the same tier. Directly below this single name is the latter World War Two dedication, comprising a dated inscription (D) within a wreath. Three names are listed below, on the lower tier of the plinth.
