Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Junction of Norwich Road and Mill Road, Horstead.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding, Latin cross bottonée beneath a gabled canopy. It is used to commemorate seventeen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two casualties from World War Two. The memorial is described with the cross-head having a “cusp to each angle with ornamental rays between. This crowns a slender octagonal shaft with decorative collar bearing floral motif carvings in relief; the shaft terminates in a square base with inverse chamfered stops. This rises from a four-sided plinth which is chamfered to the top and corner edges, with inverse chamfered stops to the corners. The plinth has a four-sided chamfered foot, which surmounts a two-stepped octagonal base” (S1). There are inscriptions incised and painted black. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the west face of the plinth, along with seventeen associated names listed on the other sides. The latter World War Two dedication is to the west face of the plinth foot (below the earlier inscription), and comprises two names displayed with the dates 1939 and 1945 to either side.
