Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in October 2017.

Location: St Mary's Churchyard, Church Road, Itteringham.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. It is described as having a “tapering shaft rising from a four-sided tapering plinth” (S1). On the plinth there are inscriptions and names on smooth inset panels in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication with seven names are to the east face (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dedication with two names are to the south face (Inscription B).

Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (7 NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.
Inscription B: 1939 – 1945/ (NAME)/ ROYAL NORFOLKS/ (NAME)/ ROYAL MARINES/ WE DEAD YOUR DAILY DEBT.
