World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: War Memorial Green, Park Road, Holkham Hall, Holkham.
Type: Obelisk
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Aberdeen granite, in the form of a tall freestanding, polished, obelisk. It is used to commemorate nineteen men from the estate that lost their lives in the World War One, and latterly two casualties from World War Two. It is described as having a “band of Greek Key design, carved in relief, around its base. Bronze wreaths are affixed directly above the band to each face of obelisk. The obelisk rises from a four-sided plinth of rough-hewn granite, which surmounts a three-stepped, square base” (S1). There are inscriptions and names on bronze panels affixed to the monument. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the west face of the plinth, with nineteen names listed on the three remaining sides along with regiment, particulars surrounding death, and date. The latter World War Two dedication (Inscription B) is directly below the former, to the west face of the upper step, with two names listed on the north and south faces of the upper step respectively.
