Full Description
February 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A probable 20th century military practice trench is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S1) and 1940s aerial photographs (S2-S3). Traces of an internal bank may be visible on some aerial photographs (S2), but these were not clear enough to map. The trench could be of Second World War date but like others identified in the vicinity (NHER 63258, 400m to the south, for example) it appears more likely to be of pre-Second World War date. It may therefore be of First World War date, or could relate to military training taking place in Breckland before 1914, or in the inter-war period. Several other similar trenches have been recorded to the east (NHER 63337, 57837 and 63338) and north (NHER 63339). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015) it is probable that the earthwork still survives.
