According to (S2) a 'large and convenient' Market House was erected on the site of the Angel Inn, the foundation stone being laid on 13 April 1830. The building cost £3800, which was subscribed by shareholders. The building transferred to the Corporation in 1832. It had a cemented front with an upper and lower portico. According to Hillen (S2) it stood where the Corn Exchange now (1907) stands, and extended backward towards the Common Staithe, the fish market being at its western end. The floor had long ranges of butchers' stalls, whilst above was a concert room.
See (S2) for further details.
(S3) reports that the Market House was erected in 1830 to take on the functions formerly provided by the Market Cross and its associated shambles (NHER 5550). (S3) notes that the Market House was designed by the Swaffham-born architect William Donthorne.
