Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. In situ by 1928 this memorial was erected to commemorate eleven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two casualties who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in October 2017.

Location: St Andrew’s Churchyard, Church Road, Holme Hale.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate eleven local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two casualties from World War Two. It is described as on a tall shaft with moulded foot, “the cross and shaft are inset to the east face; the monogram IHS is carved in relief within a circle at the centre of the cross-head with four floral relief roundels to each arm of the cross. The shaft rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth atop a single-step base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in incised lettering, painted black. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the east face, with eleven names (including regiment) listed on the north and south faces. The latter World War Two dedication and two names (Inscription B) is on the west face. The memorial surmounts a wider, square stone platform, with eight small decorative iron posts, and chains hung between; to enclose the memorial.
