World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: St Mary's Churchyard, Kirkgate, Holme-next-the-Sea.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross fleurée. It is used to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. It is described as on a tall shaft with moulded foot, “the east face of the cross-head has the dates 1914 – 1918 incised across the horizontal arms, while the west face has the dates 1939 – 1945. The shaft is inset to the east face with an inverted sword carved in relief. It rises from a four-sided, tapering plinth upon a two-stepped, chamfered base” (S1). There are inscriptions, names, and regimental details on the plinth in incised lettering, painted black. The former World War One dedication and six names (Inscription A) is to the east face. Directly below to the upper step of the base the memorial is titled (Inscription B). With a further six names and dedication (Inscription C) on the south face. The latter World War Two names are located on the west face, with a combined dedication (Inscription D) on the north face. The whole monument surmounts a concrete block, with four floral tribute holders at each corner, and steps to the east side.
