Summary

World War One memorial constructed from Clipsham limestone, in the form of a small freestanding wheel-head cross fleurée. This memorial was erected to commemorate eleven local men who lost their lives during World War One, and a further two who died from their wounds after. Discussions began in July 1918, with a scheme agreed in March 1919, the monument was unvailed on 03 October 1919. It was commissioned from Messrs Cornish and Gaymer of North Walsham, designed by John Gaymer; the two additional names were later added in 1928 by the former. Following grant funding from War Memorials Trust the memorial was restored in 2012. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2017.

Description:
The memorial is constructed from Clipsham sandstone, in the form of a small freestanding wheel-head cross fleurée. It is used to commemorate eleven members of the local community who lost their lives during World War One, and a further two who had died from their wounds after. The memorial has been described as having a moulded collar with floral carvings crowning “a slender, fluted shaft, which terminates in a square base with inverted chamfered stops to the corners. The shaft rises from a four-sided plinth with a moulded foot, surmounting a three-stepped octagonal base. The whole stands on an octagonal concrete platform” (S1). There is an inscription on the east face of the plinth, with names listed on the remaining faces (by regiment/military service), all in carved relief.
