Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding chamfered wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate eight local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three servicemen who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2017.

Location: St Andrew's Churchyard, The Street, Little Barningham.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding chamfered wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate eight local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly three servicemen who died in World War Two. It is described as having a “splayed foot on a narrow, rectangular plinth surmounting a chamfered, block base. The west face of the cross-head has a circular emboss to the centre” (S1). The inscriptions and names are in incised lettering, painted black. The First World War dedication is on the west face of the cross shaft accompanied by an amalgamated list of eleven names (Inscription A) from both conflicts. Below this, World War Two dates (Inscription B) are inscribed into the upper surface of the plinth, along with another dedication (Inscription C) on the plinth face.

Inscription B: 1939 – 45.
Inscription C: THE GOLDEN EVENING BRIGHTENS IN THE WEST/ SOON SOON TO FAITHFUL WARRIORS COMES THEIR REST/ SWEET IS THE CALM OF PARADISE THE BLEST./ ALLELUIA.
