Summary

World War One memorial constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding obelisk. This memorial was erected to commemorate five local servicemen who died in service during World War One, and latterly further dedicated in gratitude for the safe return of all who served from the parish during World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in January 2018.

Location: St Mary's Churchyard, Station Road, Little Fransham.

Description:
The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding obelisk. It is used to commemorate five local servicemen who died in service during World War One, and latterly further dedicated in gratitude for the safe return of all who served from the parish during World War Two. It is described as having a “moulded foot, rising from a tapering, four-sided plinth surmounting a three-stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions and names in incised lettering on the plinth. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) on the south face, and the latter World War Two dedication (Inscription B) on the east face.

Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (5 NAMES).
Inscription B: 1939 – 1945./ THANKS BE TO GOD/ FOR THE SAFE RETURN/ OF ALL WHO SERVED/ FROM THIS PLACE.
