Full Description
January 2020. Metal-detecting. [1].
Late Iron Age or early Roman hoard of four copper alloy objects.
Comprising a pair of matching lyre-shaped strap mounts, a binding strip from an unknown object (possibly a harness) and a ring. The strap mounts have internal spikes and it is thought that they were probably used as 'bridle burrs' or studded cheekpieces - fixed to the outer side of each bridle of a pair of horses harnessed to a vehicle and acting as coercive devices. Hoards of horse-related items such as this have long been regarded as Late Iron Age, although their date range is now seen as extending beyond the Roman conquest. In Norfolk, a post-Conquest Boudican context has been suggested for a number of hoards.
Information from PAS import. See drawings (S1)-(S3).
The hoard was submitted as potential Treasure (Ref: 2020 T360).
P. Watkins (HES), 1 March 2021.
