Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, in the form of a freestanding cross botonée. This memorial was erected to commemorate twenty-seven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three casualties from World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in February 2018.

Location: The churchyard, Church of Holy Trinity, The Street, Marham.
Type: Cross Botonee
Description:
The memorial is in the form of a freestanding cross botonée. It is used to commemorate twenty-seven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three casualties from World War Two. It is described as “rising from the heavily moulded collar of an octagonal shaft. The cross shaft stands on a pedestal, square on plan, on a three-stepped base” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the front face, and an epitaph (Inscription B) is on the front face of the base’s upper step. The thirty names, including the latter World War Two additions, are recorded on the other faces of the pedestal and on the foot of the cross shaft.
Proposed: Date unknown. In January 1949, the “Reverend WO Allison chaired a meeting at which a committee formed to arrange for the addition of three Second World War casualty names” (S1).
