Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding, polished, Classical vase on the pedimented top of a stele. This memorial was erected to commemorate thirty local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in March 2018.

Location: Approximately 13m to the south-west of the church porch, St Mary's Church, Lynn Road, Middleton.
Type: Classical Vase
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, polished, Classical vase on the pedimented top of a stele. It is used to commemorate thirty local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. It is described as having “two krater-like handles and etched decoration standing on the pedimented top of a stele, square on plan. The stele has a two-stage base and the whole is set on a square concrete platform. The front faces of the pediments are etched with decorative foliage motifs, while the top and bottom of the stele are encircled by an incised pattern echoing the form of metopes” (S1). There are inscriptions on the stele in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face (Inscription A), with the thirty names listed respectively to either side. The latter World War Two dedication is to the rear along with the associated four names (Inscription B). Enclosing the memorial is a metal rail “carried by eight low ornamental iron posts” (S1) set to the concrete platform.
