Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding wheel cross. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate twenty-three local men who died during World War One, and latterly seven local men who died during World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in February 2018.

Location: Church of St Mary the Virgin, Church Road, Northrepps.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding wheel cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-three local men who died during World War One, and latterly seven local men who died during World War Two. It is described as square in plan, on a polished-granite “elongated tapered plinth and single-stepped base” (S1). There is an inscription on the plinth to the front (east) elevation, with twenty-three names listed on the north and south elevation; split in two, twelve and eleven respectively. The latter seven names associated with World War Two are on the west elevation. Photographs (S5) suggest the inscription and names are in raised leaded lettering, painted black. This monument is “bounded by kerbstones, having eight cast-iron posts linked by metal chains” (S1).
