World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Approximately 35m to the north-west of Church of All Saints, The churchyard, The Green, North Runcton.
Type: Cross Bottonee
Description:
The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding bottonée cross-head. On a tall, octagonal, shaft. It is used to commemorate fifteen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is described as “the cross shaft rises from a pedestal, octagonal on plan, that stands on a four-stepped base. The uppermost step is square on plan, whilst the three below are octagonal (squares with chamfered corners)” (S1). There are inscriptions on the pedestal in incised and painted lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front face (Inscription A), with fifteen names and regiment, listed on the adjacent faces. The latter World War Two date with three names [and regiment (S4)] (Inscription B) is to the second step of the base.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. In situ by 1928 as evidenced by the Ordnance Survey map (S6).
Inscription A: IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH/ WHO LAID/ DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918.
Inscription B: 1939 – 1945/ (3 NAMES).
