World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Churchyard of the Church of St Martin, Cromer Road, Overstrand.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Clipsham stone, the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate forty local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly twelve men who died in World War Two. It is described as 5m tall, “pierced and cusped, atop a slender octagonal shaft with moulded collar and foot, surmounting a pentagonal plinth and three-stepped base” (S1). There is an inscription carved in relief.

Inscription: TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND TO KEEP/ IN REMEMBRANCE THE/ MEN OF OVERSTRAND/ WHO GAVE THIER LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919// GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.// (NAMES)// 1939 – 1945// (NAMES).
