Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from granite, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate seven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in April 2018.

Location: The churchyard, Church of St Mary Magdalene, Narborough Road, Pentney.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from granite, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate seven members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly three men who died in World War Two. It is described as “standing on a tapering plinth with a single-stepped base” (S1) and is enclosed by a low granite kerb. There are inscriptions and names in incised lettering (S4). The former World War One dedication and seven associated names (Inscription A) is to the front face of the plinth. The latter World War Two dedication and associated three names (Inscription B) is on a granite slab at the foot of the memorial.

Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING/ AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ (7 NAMES).
Inscription B: THIS STONE COMMEMORATES THOSE OF/ THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ 1939-1945 WAR/ (3 NAMES).
